1921 - 1922 - Town of Kahla, Thuringia 50 Pfennig
The front design has a handwritten quote framed by oak leaves and ivy, symbolizing honor and remembrance.
The Gothic header reads “50 Pf(g). Gutschein der Stadt Kahla S.A.”, meaning “50 Pfennig Voucher of the Town of Kahla, Saale.”
The quote in old German handwriting reads approximately:
“Das Blatt erlahmt, bevor die im Glauben aus Not Weichen und Opfer freudig ihr Leben hingegeben haben, darf nicht unbeachtet bleiben! – von Hindenburg”
Translation:
“The leaf withers before those who, in faith, yielded from distress and joyfully gave their lives, must not be forgotten! – von Hindenburg”
This line references Field Marshal Paul von Hindenburg, connecting the note’s patriotic theme to World War I remembrance — fitting for a series dedicated to the Leuchtenburg Ehrenmal (War Memorial).
The back depicts the courtyard (Ehrenhof) of the Leuchtenburg Castle, a hilltop fortress above Kahla. It served as a memorial site for fallen soldiers after WWI, hence the title “Ehrenhof des Leuchtenburg-Ehrenmals.”
