🎨 Design and Imagery

The design keeps the comical layout of all notes in this series:

  • Side Panels:

    • Left – A pudgy Danish soldier grinning confidently.

    • Right – A horn-blower sounding the alarm.
Both appear on every note in the series.

  • Center Scene:

    • Nighttime street scene under a moon.

    • A townsman leans from a window, firing a musket at what he believes is the approaching enemy.

    • The target is humorously revealed to be a cat on a roof — the “first shot” of the imaginary battle!

    • Caption reads “Der erste Schuß” (“The First Shot”).

  • Color Palette: Muted blue, olive green, black, and white lithograph printing — bright yet rustic, in Low German folk-art style.
