1921 – German City of Birkenfeld 25 Pfennig
This beautifully engraved 1921 German Notgeld issue was released by the Landesteil Birkenfeld, a historic district administered at the time by Oldenburg, during the post–World War I monetary crisis. Executed in warm brown and teal tones, the note is a classic example of scenic Notgeld that emphasizes regional pride and a deep connection to nature.
The obverse presents a finely detailed panoramic town view of Birkenfeld, with clustered houses, church spires, and rolling countryside beneath an expansive sky. The orderly composition reflects civic stability and tradition, while the denomination 25 Pfennig appears prominently in geometric frames on both sides. Official text notes the temporary validity of the note, a defining feature of emergency money.
The reverse features a tranquil forest landscape with a stag standing beside a woodland stream, framed by oak leaves and acorns—symbols of strength, endurance, and the German forest. A short poetic verse below the image expresses a longing for peace, nature, and homeland, contrasting rural calm with the noise and turmoil of the modern world. This lyrical element elevates the note beyond currency into a miniature work of regional art and literature.
Highly collectible today, Birkenfeld Notgeld issues are prized for their scenic artistry, poetry, and excellent craftsmanship.
