1920 – German City of Diepholz 50 Pfennig

CA$7.00

This bold 1920 German Notgeld issue was issued for the Kreis Diepholz during the immediate post–World War I economic crisis. Printed in striking red and black tones, the note showcases strong Gothic typography and heraldic symbolism typical of early Weimar emergency money.

The obverse prominently displays the denomination 50 Pfennig with the inscription “Gutschein über 50 Pfennig für den Kreis Diepholz”. At center is a heraldic shield featuring a lion and eagle, symbols of regional authority and governance. Decorative knotwork borders frame the design, adding visual depth and security-like ornamentation.

The reverse presents a detailed architectural illustration of Schloss Diepholz, the historic castle tower that serves as a defining landmark of the town. Rendered in clean red linework, the scene emphasizes local heritage and civic pride. The combination of heraldry on the obverse and landmark architecture on the reverse makes this note a classic and highly collectible example of German Notgeld.

Issued with a redemption clause limiting its validity, this piece was intended for short-term local circulation, yet today it stands as an attractive historical and artistic artifact.
