1928 Spain 25 Pesetas - XF – Banco de España – Calderón de la Barca – Historic Monument Scene
1928 Spain 25 Pesetas issue, released by the Banco de España and dated Madrid, 15 de Agosto de 1928. This attractive pre–Spanish Civil War note represents the final years of the Spanish monarchy and is a popular collectible from the late Alfonso XIII era.
The obverse features a finely engraved portrait of Pedro Calderón de la Barca, one of Spain’s greatest playwrights of the Golden Age. At center stands a detailed depiction of a monumental statue, flanked by ornate guilloché security patterns. The denomination “VEINTICINCO PESETAS” is boldly displayed, along with official signatures and serial number D9.457.611, printed in red.
The reverse presents a dramatic historical vignette illustrating a public gathering around a stone cross monument, rendered in rich red and violet tones. The scene is filled with period figures, depth, and movement, making it one of the more visually engaging Spanish designs of the 1920s. The craftsmanship is highlighted by intricate line work and classic engraving techniques typical of Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co., London.
This note is an excellent representative example of early 20th-century Spanish paper currency, combining cultural heritage, historical imagery, and strong collector appeal.
