1921 – German City of Merseburg 50 Pfennig Notgeld “Der Dom” Note
1921 German City of Merseburg 50 Pfennig Notgeld note is a superb example of artist-designed emergency currency issued during the economic instability of the early Weimar Republic. Authorized by the City of Merseburg (Saxony-Anhalt) and dated 1 May 1921, this note formed part of a richly illustrated municipal series created to address shortages of circulating coinage following World War I.
The obverse features a beautifully rendered architectural vignette titled “Der Dom” (The Cathedral), depicting Merseburg Cathedral, one of the city’s most important historical and religious landmarks. The scene shows the Romanesque cathedral complex with towers and surrounding buildings, framed within an ornate border and printed in an attractive violet, ochre, and black color palette. Small figures in the foreground add scale and narrative depth, a hallmark of high-quality German Notgeld artwork of the period.
The reverse bears the inscription “Gutschein der Stadt Merseburg” (Voucher of the City of Merseburg) and prominently displays the city’s recurring raven perched on a ring, a powerful heraldic symbol consistently used throughout the Merseburg Notgeld series. Additional features include an official serial number in red ink, municipal authorization “Der Magistrat,” and the signature of the city treasurer. Printing was carried out by Gebrüder Parcus of Munich, a leading German security printer responsible for many of the finest Notgeld issues of the early 20th century.
As a higher-denomination issue, 50 Pfennig Notgeld notes often experienced heavier circulation and were frequently redeemed and destroyed, making surviving examples with strong color and intact detail especially desirable. This “Der Dom” design is particularly sought after for its architectural subject, artistic composition, and strong local historical significance.
